Chingola stakeholders have emphasized the urgent need for sustainable mining practices to safeguard the environment and vital water sources.
During the World Water Day celebrations in Chingola, Mayor Johnson Kangombe highlighted the critical importance of advocating for responsible mining and taking immediate action to prevent pollution, which threatens fresh water sources.
“In Chabanyama Township, the once-flowing Chabanyama stream is now struggling to reach its peak due to pollution from plastic waste and acidic effluent from mining operations. What was once a vital resource for our community has become a symbol of environmental neglect. This is a wake-up call. If we do not act swiftly and decisively, we risk losing even more of our precious water sources,” Mr. Kangombe stated.
Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited (MWSC) Managing Director Ndilakulampa Hamalambo echoed these concerns, stressing the importance of balancing mining activities with the protection of water sources. While acknowledging that mining is a vital economic driver, he emphasized that safeguarding fresh water is essential for the health and well-being of future generations.
In addition, MWSC announced that the Government has allocated K5.7 million for the rehabilitation of water and sanitation infrastructure in Chiwempala Township.
Eng. Hamalambo explained that the water network in Chiwempala was in a poor state due to its age and vandalism, making it difficult to provide reliable water supply to the area.
He expressed gratitude for the Government’s support, noting that the K5.7 million funding would play a significant role in improving the water and sanitation infrastructure, addressing longstanding issues, and complementing ongoing efforts to enhance water
production, treatment, and distribution.
