The Government is set to implement a new piped water system in Kasumbalesa, ensuring that residents at one of the busiest border and trading points in the country have access to clean water.
Health Minister Dr. Elijah Muchima made the announcement during the launch of the Cholera Oral Vaccine in Chililabombwe, as part of the government’s intensified efforts to address the ongoing cholera epidemic, which has so far claimed seven lives.
Dr. Muchima revealed that the project, which includes laying a new water network, drilling industrial boreholes, and installing tanks, will be executed by Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited (MWSC). The initiative will also involve the dismantling of all shallow wells, which have been identified as sources of contamination.
He confirmed that the funding for the project had been approved and released by Cabinet. This initiative is part of the government's broader commitment to the welfare of its citizens. “Tests have shown that the shallow wells currently in use are contaminated and contribute to the transmission of cholera. The government intends to disinfect and bury these wells, but before that, we have secured funding to provide alternative, safe sources of water,” he said.
The project will involve the drilling of eight solar-powered boreholes, along with the installation of a water distribution network, ensuring that the entire Kasumbalesa area has access to safe, piped water.
In addition, the government will rehabilitate all public toilets, which will be managed by the Zambia Flying Doctors on behalf of the municipalities.
This initiative aims to significantly reduce the risk of cholera and improve overall public health in the district.
