The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has emphasized the critical importance of integrity in water and sanitation service delivery, urging Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company (MWSC) to prioritize the fight against corruption.
During a training session for MWSC's Integrity Committee (IC), ACC Copperbelt Regional Manager Chola Kasongo highlighted the role of integrity in promoting accountability and performance within both public and private institutions.
Mr. Kasongo reminded attendees that the Integrity Committee program, which is part of Zambia’s National Anti-Corruption Policy established in 2009, is designed to prevent corruption and foster integrity across various sectors. The program encourages institutions to adopt anti-corruption practices as part of their daily operations.
Mr. Kasongo said Integrity was central to preventing corruption and improving service delivery in commercial water utilities and other quasi government institutions
“The ACC, as the lead institution in the fight against corruption, remains committed to supporting MWSC in its efforts to prevent corruption and any related malpractices. We are here to provide the necessary technical support to help institutionalize corruption prevention and promote integrity in all aspects of your operations,” he said.
MWSC Managing Director Ndilakulampa Hamalambo echoed the importance of fighting corruption, stressing that the damaging effects of corruption hinder national development. He explained that corruption leads to poor service delivery as resources intended for essential services are diverted to enrich a few individuals.
“As a company, we have a duty to protect the resources entrusted to us and ensure they are used for the benefit of all,” Mr. Hamalambo said.
“Promoting integrity within MWSC is not just a responsibility, but a commitment to our community and the country as a whole. Each of us plays a crucial role in safeguarding these resources and advancing the fight against corruption,” he said.
The training session underscored the need for all employees to take ownership of their roles in promoting integrity and to be vigilant in ensuring that corruption does not undermine the vital services provided by MWSC.
Both the ACC and MWSC are united in their resolve to build a culture of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the water and sanitation sector, ultimately ensuring better service delivery and a more prosperous future for Zambia.
